There’s some precedent for this system: 0–9, then A-F to represent 16 digits, it’s called hexadecimal. I think the real value in it is that I can split the boxes four ways in each direction without having to resort to 2 digit numbers. I suppose I could have used only letters, but something bothered me about only using half the alphabet! haha
